24th August - a good day's mixed fishing

The idea of this day was to start off at the top of the beat (Hartington) and fish down to The Temple.  I had only fished these upper reaches of the beat once beforehand. The intention was to fish the dry fly for Brownies working down the beat then to fish nymphs for Grayling on the return journey.

After a brief stop off in the village for a coffee and some supplies from the village store it was off to the river ...

The top of the beat was very quiet with not many casts as very few fish were seen rising.
I did however manage one nice little Brown Trout from a run half way down.

As I approached The Temple I managed another Brown Trout from the run just by the gate.

Time for a break and a drink, and change my set up to chase the Grayling.

Nicely refreshed and rested I set off working the beat upstream.  Not too far from The Temple I returned to a very nice run where I had caught some nice Grayling on a previous visit.

I was soon into a couple of Grayling which were safely returned to (hopefully) be caught another day.

There were only a further couple of grayling from a run just a little further upstream. However, the very upper part of the beat again proved to be unproductive and so that was it for the day. At least the weather was still good for the journey home.

POSTSCRIPT - as it turned out, due to a number of different circumstances, this proved to be my last visit to the Beresford beat. Unfortunately the travel involved severely limited the number of visits I could make in a season and also I miss the best parts of the day. Despite enjoying myself when I got the chance to fish, the travel and costs involved made me reluctantly decide not to renew my membership the following season.
